Denmark sets EV record: 96% of private car purchases are now electric
Af Sara Nielsen

In April 2026, something remarkable happened on the Danish car market: 96.3% of all private car purchases were EVs. This is not just a statistic — it is a historic turning point, telling us that the petrol car is becoming a rarity on Danish roads.
A number that needs context
Just five years ago, EVs accounted for less than 15% of private car sales in Denmark. The share now approaching 100% in April is a development that surprises even the most optimistic industry observers. Looking at all of 2026 combined, 81.9% of all cars sold — private and commercial together — are EVs.
Three factors behind the record
Prices have fallen sharply. The cheapest EVs on the Danish market now start below 200,000 DKK, and an ongoing price war between established brands and new players continues to push prices down.
The range of models has exploded. With more than 100 different EV models available in Denmark, there is now an EV for almost every need — from compact city car to large family SUV with over 600 km of range.
The charging network has matured. Denmark now has one of Europe's densest charging infrastructures, and range anxiety has gradually ceased to be a real barrier for most car buyers.
Who sells the most?
Skoda is the best-selling EV brand in Denmark in 2026, and the Skoda Elroq is the year's best-selling car overall. It is notable that neither Tesla nor the German premium brands top the list — consumers are increasingly prioritising value for money over prestige.
What is happening to petrol cars?
With under 4% of private car purchases, petrol and diesel cars are effectively disappearing from the new car market. This is putting pressure on used car prices for combustion-engine vehicles, and service workshops are adapting to a new reality.
Is the record here to stay?
The April figure of 96.3% will likely fluctuate from month to month. But the overall direction is clear: Denmark is approaching the natural ceiling for EV sales, and the car market of the future will look markedly different from what we knew just ten years ago.
96.3% of Danish private car purchases in April 2026 were EVs. The petrol car is not dead — but it is becoming a niche.
