8 out of 10 new cars in Denmark are electric — what happened?

Af Sara Nielsen

Something remarkable has happened in the Danish car market. Just five years ago, electric vehicles were a niche product reserved for early tech enthusiasts. Today, it is the petrol car that is the exception. In April 2026, 96.3 percent of all new private cars sold in Denmark were electric — a share unlikely to be matched on any comparable market in the world.

The numbers tell the story

In April 2026, 13,721 new electric vehicles were registered in Denmark — a 43.5 percent increase compared to April 2025. Looking at all of 2026, EVs account for 81.9 percent of all cars sold in the country. The total number of registered electric vehicles in Denmark has now exceeded 614,000 and grows every day.

The charging infrastructure keeps pace

A key factor behind the high sales figures is charging infrastructure. The number of public charging points in Denmark has passed 50,000, growing by more than 30 percent in 2025 alone. Danes now trust that a charger will be available when they need one — and that confidence is reflected directly in car buying decisions.

Who is buying what?

The Toyota bZ4X is the best-selling EV in Denmark in 2026 with 3,707 units sold, representing 6.1 percent of total EV sales. In April, the Skoda Elroq topped the charts with 1,088 units. The market is in motion — European and Japanese brands hold the top positions while competition from new entrants intensifies.

In April 2026, 96.3% of all new private cars in Denmark were electric. This is not a trend — it is a transformation.

What does this mean for you as a car buyer?

When the market tips this decisively towards electric vehicles, consumers benefit: better prices on new models, shorter delivery times and a growing supply of used EVs. Considering making the switch from petrol to electric? The combination of lower running costs, a well-developed charging network and a historically wide selection makes 2026 a great time to make the move.
